Pole Work Layouts using 8-12 poles

Noughts & Crosses

Number of poles required: Eight

Ok, so here's how:

A: Trot

B: Trot

C: Trot

D: Trot & Canter

E: Walk, Trot & Canter

There are additional lines you can ride on this layout however, it will look too complicated if I add anymore to it so I will post this below.

Square Space

This layout can be used either ridden or in-hand. This exercise I find great for working on keeping control of the shoulders. 🐴

Number of poles required: Eight

A: Walk, halt transitions, (rein back on a straight section)

A: Trot

B: Walk

C: Halt transitions inside the box or, ground tie practice.

D: Trot & Canter

E: Walk, Trot & Canter

Pole Spacing

This layout is based on 3 metre poles laid end to end to create the square.

The outside poles are spaced for 1 trot stride which is 5.5 heel to toe steps of my size 3 feet

The above is a guide only which works for me and both my horses which are 15hh & 16hh. Spacing will need to be adjusted slightly depending on the size of the horse or pony and of course your feet :)
